Welcome to Wales, where just a hop across the border from England feels like you've entered a new world entirely. This compact country boasts inspiring hills, formidable castles and moody coastlines of crumbling rock and golden sand.
Step from the grounds of Hallwood House, straight onto the walking trail around Carsington Water and enjoy wildlife watching as you follow the line of the shore. Nearby are all the best parts of the Peak District, including Dovedale, the Tissington Trail and the Heights of Abraham. And you might want to let the children know that Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park is just down the road and Alton Towers is only half an hour away.
We’ve tried to think about everything to make your stay at Hallwood House just perfect. In all of our big houses to rent, we provide all the essential features to cater for a large group. Here’s a list of all the practical provisions we have at the house. If there’s anything you can’t see here but need, just ask as we’ll see what we can do.
Hallwood House is located on the banks of Carsington Water between the villages of Hopton and Wirksworth in Derbyshire.
This magnificent stately home is full of exquisite rooms and amazing art collections. There are also acres of glorious gardens and parkland to explore, a gift shop, plus a farmyard and playground for the youngsters.
A fantastic and fun day out for all the family awaits at the Alton Towers Resort, the largest theme park in the UK. With over 40 rides and attractions, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.
Enjoy a cable-car journey soaring high above the Derwent Valley to an amazing hilltop park. Here you can venture underground into illuminated caverns, take a stroll around the serpentine paths and drink in the magnificent vistas. Kids will love the adventure playgrounds and woodland trails.
Head to nearby Carsington Water, one of the largest reservoirs in the UK, and enjoy a range of watersports for all levels including rowing boats, kayaks and paddle boards. Alternatively, stay on dry land and hire a bike to cycle around one of the reservoir trails.
Go behind the scenes and take a guided tour of the first whisky distillery in the Peak District region. Experience the atmosphere and smells of this working distillery as you are guided through the whisky making process, finishing with a tasting of the distillery’s range of gins.
Check in is at 4pm on the day of your arrival at Hallwood House, and check out is at 10am.
Unfortunately pets are not allowed at Hallwood House.
There is parking for ten cars in the courtyard.

The nearest train stations are: Cromford (4 miles), Matlock Bath (6 miles) and Derby (15 miles).
Yes, we ask to hold a cautionary deposit of £500 during your stay at Hallwood House. This is requested just two weeks prior to your stay, and is returned shortly after, assuming no damage to the property or its contents (see our Booking T&Cs for more information).
