Large holiday cottages where you can go fishing
With lots of people to please on your group getaway, you need somewhere that can cater for all sorts of different interests. Chances are there’ll be a keen angler or two in your party so you’ll want to know all about the local fishing. Well, what could be better than having a fishing lake in the grounds of your property, where the fishing rights are all yours, all day, every day?
That’s exactly what you get at some of our houses, like Ebrington Manor in the Cotswolds, which has its very own spring-fed lake with rainbow trout and carp. Rods and tackle are provided and there’s even a trout smoker. After a day on the lake, you can enjoy an evening barbecue at the boathouse, cooked on the South African inspired boma fire pit, while you tell stories of the one that got away. At Wantage Manor in Oxfordshire, you can fly fish for trout between April and October on the river that runs through the grounds. Feel at one with the world as you sit on the river bank, surrounded by 30 acres of peaceful parkland.
While some of our properties have their own lake or stretch of river, others are close to some great fishing, so the anglers can escape undisturbed for a few hours. The Windrush Hyde Estate, for example, is within the Cotswolds where the Water Park has over 70 lakes with carp, coarse and fly fishing.

Large Houses and Cottages with Fishing Lakes FAQ:
-
Do you supply fishing equipment?
We don’t supply fishing equipment in general but some of our houses do have rods and tackle that you can use. This will vary depending on which house you are staying at so ask us at the time of booking if you want to know what’s provided. The best thing to do is to bring your own fishing gear, then you know you have everything you need, and if that includes your lucky fishing rod, then all the better!
-
Can you arrange fishing lessons?
If you are a novice angler or you need to brush up your skills, you may decide to get fishing lessons. We don’t arrange them directly but we can put you in touch with local specialists who can give you lessons. Sometimes you can also arrange this directly with the property owner or manager. Ask us when you book and we will do everything we can to help you arrange fishing lessons.

What’s the best time of year to go fishing?
This varies by species and by location but there are some specific rules too. River fishing for coarse fish in England and Wales has a close season from 15 March to 15 June. This means you can’t fish between these dates and it’s to protect the fish when they are spawning. The best salmon fishing season is typically from March to September. However, generally speaking, you can fish in lakes at any time of the year. This applies to our luxury cottages with lakes, unless there is a specific reason for fishing to be suspended, in which case we will let you know. The summer months are a good time for a fishing holiday if you are fishing in lakes, partly because it's more pleasant to sit out all day!
-
Do I need a licence to go fishing?
You do need a licence to go fishing, even for a private lake. Children up to 12 years old can fish without a licence and children aged 13-16 need a licence but it is free. You can buy a fishing licence online at https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences and you can get one that covers a day, a week or a year. If you’re interested in sea fishing, the good news is, you don’t need a licence for that.

What else can we do on a fishing holiday?
The great thing about our cottages with lakes is that there’s plenty to do for everyone. Grounds that have a lake tend to have acres to explore, with formal gardens, woodlands and wildlife, and some have swimming pools, tennis courts, hot tubs and more. And don’t forget, the tranquillity of sitting beside a lake is good for your wellbeing whether you are fishing or not. Back inside you may have a games room, library or cinema room and maybe even an indoor pool. Out and about, our houses are in great locations, with local towns and villages to visit, where you can go shopping, visit galleries and stop for afternoon tea. There are walks from your doorstep through some of the UK’s finest countryside and you are never far from popular tourist attractions, from museums and theme parks to steam railways and vineyards.
