Start with Colchester, once England’s capital. Discover its Roman heritage and its connections to the English Civil War. Visit the castle, view contemporary visual arts at Firstsite, and explore the Dutch Quarter - where Twinkle Twinkle Little Star was reputedly written! Head to the coast for coastal gems such as Frinton on Sea and Walton on the Naze.
Get your walking boots on to explore the pretty villages of Essex such as Finchingfield and Great Bardfield, for some olde English charm.
