Pen Afon Hero

Pen Afon Wales

A hillside hideaway with a Welsh heart

On a green hill in Wales with views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Pen Afon is a house you feel safe in. It has solid walls, built with local stone, terraces and fireplaces of Welsh slate, and a river marking its boundary. The rugged good looks of the exterior give way to stylish, natural palettes inside, complementing original 18th-century features which include sash windows and shutters, cast iron radiators and old beams.

Enjoy cosy comforts in the sitting room, throwing a log on the open fire, or gather in the spacious garden room. The open plan kitchen and diner, with bar stools at the counter, make cooking and eating a sociable affair, and double doors open to the terrace for al fresco dining. Within the grounds, sits the games barn, where the children can play table football and ping pong when the soft Welsh rain interrupts outdoor games in the 15-acre gardens.

Bring a crowd, because the Grade ll listed, six-bedroom house is joined on the hillside by a converted, two-bedroom coach house. With exposed timbers, whitewashed tongue-and-groove panelling, and an exposed stone wall in the living room, it’s a celebration of local materials, fashioned to create a comfortable family space.

Back in the main house, draw lots for the master bedroom. It’s tucked away down a private corridor and, in the ensuite, you can soak up the views while you soak in the freestanding, roll top bath. No one loses though, because all the bedrooms are fabulous, with deep mattresses, Melin Tregwynt Welsh woollen blankets, and access to luxury bathrooms with walk-in showers. If Wales is on your mind, or in your heart, Pen Afon is for you.

Topleft Bottomright

What we think

Hidden by woodland like Rivendell, Pen Afon is a gorgeous stone house and adjacent coach house. We love its calm interiors and how it’s clothed by nature, all combining to provide a deeply relaxing get-away in the foothills of Eryri.
