Avonley House The South West

Devon valley views close to the coast

There’s so much to love at Avonley House in rural Devon. If peaceful valley views are on your must-have list, it’s a big tick. If a natural five-acre playground appeals, it’s for you. And if entertainment options are important, the tennis court, TV room, hot tub and sauna truly deliver.

When you arrive in this unspoilt corner of Devon and walk into Avonley House, you can’t help but relax. Spread yourselves out across the main house and the attached self-contained family annex (perfect for those who want a bit more space of their own). Reconvene in the inviting family room before lunch in the orangery that sweeps across the back of the house and has a comfy seating area at the other end. From here, step out and enjoy the gardens. Take a dip in the wood barrel hot tub, play croquet on the lawn, or follow the woodland and wild meadow trail. Swelter in the sauna before dunking in the dip tank or under one of the woodland cold water showers. As afternoon turns to evening, search out the sundowner spot, where you can gather round the firepit and watch spectacular sunsets.

At bedtime, the eight comfortable bedrooms, most with dual aspect views and ensuites, are ready to sweep you off into sweet dreams. Awake to birdsong and take your coffee and croissants onto the breakfast terrace among the azaleas.

It's a short drive to the best Devon beaches and when you get back all sandy, there’s an outdoor ‘shower shack’ with hot water showers that the kids and the dogs will love. It’s thoughtful details like this that make Avonley House a special place for a multi-generational family get-together or for two or three families together.

Larger group?

There’s the option to book the converted stables in the grounds of the house which can accommodate an extra five guests in two bedrooms, for an additional charge (subject to availability). The stables has its own open-plan living/dining/kitchen as well as a private patio and hot tub. There's also the option to use a yurt in  the grounds (summer only) if booking the stables. Please contact us for more details.

What we think

A stone’s throw to Salcombe and the other highlights of South Devon, Avonley is sun-trap of a house, with exquisite views, lush gardens and warm characterful interiors. And with surrounding meadows, a short walk to the pub, a barrel sauna, and a tennis court…there’s something for everyone whatever the weather.
