Cedar Tree Manor Hero

Cedar Tree Manor East of England

Historic manor on the edge of Constable country

Not every Elizabethan manor comes with a cinema room, gym and swimming pool but Cedar Tree Manor in Essex does. You are met with towering octagonal chimneys, Dutch gables and leaded, stone mullion windows. Step into the huge wood-panelled entrance hall, which doubles as a dining room, and say hello to the knight in armour. Explore the many reception rooms – bar room, drawing room with comfy sofas and a pool table, music room with baby grand piano, and the cosy snug. Escape to the old library for solitude, watch a film on the 126-inch screen in the cinema room, play games in the arcade room and hit the gym and sauna. There’s no shortage of log burners and Smart TVs amidst the historic splendour, and the Sonos sound system gives you music pretty much wherever you go.

In the 100-year-old ornamental gardens, with their centrepiece Cedar of Lebanon, explore the walled garden, rose and yew walks, 18th century lily pond, apple and pear arcade, and various spinneys and ponds. There’s 60 acres of private woodland, parkland and paddocks and you can walk a woodland path around the perimeter. Step through a gate reputedly from Dick Whittington’s London home and lose yourself in the wilderness garden. Bringing things up to date, there’s also a hot tub, a 20m swimming pool and children’s play equipment.

Back inside, the family kitchen has a dining table and sofas to keep things sociable, and there’s also a catering kitchen. Eventually it’s time for bed and the main house sleeps 14, with the option to make up several extra beds. You can also spill into the East House, which sleeps another six. For guests with accessibility needs, you can book Orchard Cottage, a bungalow in the grounds which has two ground floor bedrooms (additional cost). Cedar Tree Manor is close to Dedham Vale - immortalised on canvas by John Constable - and the Roman town of Colchester.
