The Georgian Lakehouse Lake District

The Georgian Lakehouse North of England

A remarkable house in a remarkable landscape

You probably already know that England’s Lake District is one of the most beautiful places on earth. What you may not know is that this house, lying in the heart of the Lake District, is equally stunning in its own right. The main house sleeps 16 guests with a separate lodge for six additional guests. These are wonderfully welcoming properties, inviting you to curl up in comfort after a long day, willing you to have cosy fireside chats over a preprandial aperitif.

Whatever the weather, you will love spending time in the quiet sitting room, a warm, sunny room with windows overlooking the garden, the marina and on to the beautiful Derwent Water. The Tartan room, which is the main hub of the house, has the most wonderful bookshelves, a log-burning stove, comfy sofas, great art and a table nestled in front of the window that is just perfect for family games. And we love the TV room, just perfect for cosying up on the comfy seating in front of the 55 inch TV with Wi-Fi sound bar and DVD. This really is a house for relaxing with your friends and your family, spending quality time together and building lasting bonds.

What an outstanding place! The house is beautifully done, with absolutely fantastic views and the loveliest beds I've ever slept in. We had a fabulous time with some of our closest friends. Thank you Big House Experience once again for all your help. We've all pledged to make this a yearly thing!

All that country air is bound to give you an appetite…

What is your preferred option for eating during your stay? Eating out? Self-catering or having specialists prepare it all for you? Or possibly a mixture of all three. Whatever your preferences, we’ve got it covered. The dining room and kitchen area is ideal for informal meals or celebratory dinners. We love the locally made oak table, which comfortably seats up to 20 people. With candelabras, stunning modern art, and lovely views of the mountains and lake, this really is something a little bit special.

Cooking connoisseurs (and novices alike) will love the modern kitchen, equipped with two ovens, two fridges, two freezers, a warming drawer, microwave, two dishwashers and even a wine fridge. There is an induction hob and even a couple of stools at the central island for sipping a glass of wine while you’re waiting for the carrots to steam! Alternatively, if you’d rather leave the slog to the experts, we offer everything from casseroles dropped off ready for the oven to waitress-served, in-house catering. And, if you have little ones with you, there are two highchairs available if you need them.

If you’d rather eat out, there is plenty of fine cuisine on offer at one of the local pubs or restaurants. The Farmer’s Arms is only a ten minute stroll, and The Chalet Restaurant, which brilliantly combines informality and style, is just five minutes away. Keswick also offers great dining out; we love Morrels and The Pheasant Inn but to be honest, half the fun is investigating to find out which restaurant best suits you.

Out and about

What can you do in the Lake District? Lots! You don’t even have to leave the grounds to have fun! There are cricket and croquet sets, footballs and plenty of other fun activities you can do right here in the extensive grounds. And not very far away you can find clay pigeon shooting, archery, off-road driving, go karting, quad biking, and paintballing. There are some wonderful walks straight from the house, and kayaking, sailing and canoeing are all available from the marina a few hundred yards away. If you don’t fancy hiking the hills, or climbing the fells you can always jump in the car and head off on some of the most scenic tours in the country.

Why not head over to Keswick? It’s only a 20-minute walk or a quick ride on the launch. You can while away a leisurely morning browsing round the characterful shops, boutiques, pubs, cafes and restaurants. There is even a theatre and, if time permits, it is well worth taking in a show. And it has a fascinating history for you to explore.

But for us, the landscape always beckons; the lakes, the mountains, the skies, the views. So much to see, so much to do, with activities for young and old alike. If you have been to the Lake District before you will know how it calls you back and if this is your first visit, one thing is for sure, you will want to come back again and again.

Location

Just two miles outside the market town of Keswick, in a spectacular setting in the village of Portinscale.
