The best places to spend Christmas
Christmas in the Cotswolds
Spend Christmas in the Cotswolds this year in a country manor that adds to the festive feelgood factor for all the family. You can visit chocolate-box villages with their Christmas lights twinkling, go for a Boxing Day walk across the gentle Cotswold hills, and seek out cosy traditional pubs full of Christmas cheer. A cinema room
It wouldn’t be Christmas if we didn’t all gather round the TV for a festive film or five. When you have a cinema room to watch your Christmas movies, in you can take it to a whole new level, watching as many movies as you want on a big screen, sinking into comfy seats with your popcorn at your side. The cinema room at Galene House has an 80-inch screen with Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon TV, Now TV, Sky TV – and a DVD player for the oldies.
A cosy fireplace
You need somewhere to hang your Christmas stockings and our large houses have some amazing fireplaces. But more than that, a cosy fire or log burner brings everyone together and creates just the happy, festive atmosphere that we all crave at Christmas time. Stay at Winsham Manor for huge fireplaces that that warm the Great Hall and the cosy, wood-panelled Winter Parlour.
A games room
Christmas is about fun and games. Having taken the children out of their electronic comfort zones for a big house Christmas break, it’s only fair to lay on some slightly more traditional activities. That’s why a games room is important, particularly if the winter weather at Christmas keeps you indoors. Many of our properties boast games rooms with table football, ping pong, pool tables, board games and other activities. Alvington Lodge even throws a Karaoke machine and disco lighting onto the mix!
A hot tub
It might not be your first idea when you think of Christmas, but a hot tub is an added luxury on a family Christmas in one of our large houses. Imagine sinking into the bubbles to wind down at the end of an exciting Christmas Day. Stay at Royd Moor Manor in Yorkshire where there are two hot tubs or Longhollow House, where the hot tub is complemented by a steam and sauna house and an outdoor plunge pool.

Will the house have a Christmas tree?
Yes. Whichever house you choose for your Christmas gathering, you can be certain there will be a Christmas tree, complete with lights and baubles. This means you will step into Christmas as soon as you step through the door and it sets the scene for a wonderful Christmas. You are perfectly welcome to bring your own decorations too, so if you have any special or sentimental ones that really make Christmas for you, make sure you pack them.

What should we pack for Christmas away?
Christmas away from home does need a little planning. Make sure you pack all your presents - with wrapping paper and sticky tape too, if you want to do your wrapping on Christmas Eve. Plan your food and drink, and remember, you can get a local delivery from the supermarket direct to the house. Think about all your Christmas traditions and bring what you need for them, whether that’s stockings to hang or Christmas crackers for the table. And, when you’re packing your clothes, don’t forget your Christmas jumpers!

Can I get a Christmas supermarket delivery to the house?
Yes, you can. Ocado and the major supermarkets will deliver to our houses. We suggest booking a delivery for the start of Christmas week so if there is anything out of stock you can nip to the local supermarket or farm shop. Put your order in as soon as you can before you arrive to make sure you get a delivery slot.

Where can I book a Christmas Lunch?
There are some excellent gastro pubs and restaurants within a short drive of most of our properties and many of them will have a Christmas Day menu. Do book as early as possible though, particularly as you will be in a large group. We have included details of local pubs and restaurants on the web page for each individual property, so check them out and get your booking in.

What are the best games to play at Christmas?
You have to have a round or two of Charades. It’s the law. Here are some other suggestions: Play Guess Who, where you each have a Post-It note on your forehead with a name and you have to guess who you are – all the people and characters must have a connection to Christmas. Or how about a scavenger game. Hide candy canes around the house for the children to find. Don’t forget, many of our houses also have board games, a piano, games rooms and more, to keep the fun going over the festive period.

Does Santa know if you stay somewhere else?
It’s perfectly understandable if the children are asking this question as you set off for your Big House Christmas. It’s a good question and the answer is, Santa knows everything. Getting the right presents to the right children is his job and, just like he knows if you’ve been good, he knows where to deliver everyone’s presents. That’s the magic of Christmas.
