For celebrations and events

The wood panelled walls , leaded windows and grand stone arches of Merchant House belie the cosy, welcoming and informal air of this Cotswold manor house. Sink into a comfy Chesterfield armchair for an afternoon nap, in the glow of the well-stocked wood-burner, enjoy a game of pool in the games room, and capture views of the Slad Valley, framed in a multitude of different window shapes.

When it’s time to celebrate, mingle in the spacious and elegant lounge, enjoying Prosecco and canapes before being seated for an unforgettable gastronomic treat, conceived and prepared by a talented in-house chef. If it’s summer-time, you can spill out onto the balcony and lawns or, if there’s a chill in the air, stoke up the fires and enjoy a night-cap from the bar.

Merchant House can be hired for exclusive use and it lends itself to parties, celebrations and weddings, as well as business events and corporate getaways.

Bedrooms that invite you to slumber in style

From cosy attic hideaways to a four-poster suite

line

When sleep finally beckons, the bedrooms at Merchant House offer welcome – and sumptuous – sanctuary. Which of the 16 characterful rooms will you choose for your peaceful slumbers?

A small-but-perfectly-formed attic room, tucked beneath the eaves? A ‘room with a view’ in the garden wing, where the  Painswick Valley sweeps away into the distance? One of the four bigger bedrooms, where luxury comes as standard, with roll-top baths, ‘rise-and-shine showers’ and monogrammed bedlinen? Or perhaps a quirky room in the chapel wing, a curved wall here and a sash window there, speaking of the house’s  fascinating history?

If you’re the reason everybody’s here – for your wedding, or birthday or special celebration –  then it’s only right that you should sleep in the luxurious George Suite. This true one-off boasts a four-poster bed, separate sitting room with a cosy log burner, and a romantic balcony with sublime views of the Cotswold countryside.

Explore the Cotswolds

Picture-perfect villages and serene, green valleys

line

Merchant House is perfectly situated to explore the Cotswolds, where five counties converge in an unspoilt corner of England. Walks through the Slad Valley, which surrounds Painswick give a sense of the ambrosial England described in Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie, and the honey-stoned Cotswold villages are just the place to stop for a lunchtime drink beneath the thatch of a traditional pub.

There’s more to the Cotswolds than picturesque villages and country trails, though. Westonbirt Arboretum is a must in the golden-red afternoons of autumn, Painswick Rococo Gardens are a pure delight in the snowdrop days of late winter, and during the summer the villages and towns are awash with colourful local festivals. The races at Cheltenham are a short hop away, Gloucester too, with its medieval cathedral, redeveloped waterfront and Regency architecture, is nearby.

Whether you are planning a special celebration, seeking sanctuary from the city or wish to explore the captivating Cotswolds, Merchant House is as good as it gets. And with staff on hand, a unique celebration meal package and other optional extras, it promises to be your most relaxing break ever.
